Roger Federer is a Swiss professional tennis player currently ranked number 3 in the world by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP). Federer was born at the Basel Cantonal Hospital in Basel, Switzerland. His father, Robert Federer, is Swiss, from Berneck, near the borders of Switzerland, Austria and Germany. and his mother, Lynette Federer (née Durand), of Kempton Park, Gauteng, is South African and her ancestors were French and Dutch Huguenots.
His achievements in professional tennis have earned him the reputation of being the best tennis player of all time. Federer became professional in 1998 and has been in the top 10 since October 2002. He
is one of eight men (and one of five in the Open Era) to win a Grand Slam. Federer shares an Open Era record for most titles at Wimbledon with Pete Sampras (seven) and the US Open with Jimmy Connors and Sampras (five). He is the only male player to win five consecutive titles at the US Open. Federer has several open-era records: occupy the # 1 position in the world for 302 weeks (including 237 consecutive weeks); win 17 individual Grand Slam titles; reach each Grand Slam final at least five times (a historic record); and reach the Wimbledon Finals ten times.
